convoluted method of factoring

 complete the square

4x^2 - 4x - 35 = 0

4(x^2 - x) - 35= 0

4(x^2 - x + 1/4 - 1/4) - 35 = 0

4(x^2 - x + 1/4) - 1 - 35 = 0

4(x^2 - x + 1/4) - 36 = 0

treat the equation as a difference of two squares,

4(x - 1/2)^2 - 6^2 = 0

factor

(2(x - 1/2) - 6) (2(x - 1/2)+ 6) = 0

(2x - 1 - 6)(2x - 1 + 6) = 0

simplify to the usual two factors.

(2x - 7)(2x + 5) = 0
